Hastings & Bexhill 67 Vs Crowborough 7
On a hot autumn afternoon with the world cup atmosphere building H&B 3rds took to the pitch missing John Fisher (away for a dirty weekend), David Getty (injured) and Kevin Lovick (work).
From kick off H&B looked to be in a hurry to get down to business and the game over as quick as possible. The pack taking control up front and the backs moving the ball well around the pitch led by the dynamic fly half Mick Ellis. A line out on the Crowborough 22 gave the first chance to score for H&B, the ball moved quickly to the opposite wing and a darting run put David Hirst just over in the corner, unfortunately losing the ball forward touching down. This gave Crowborough a scrum on their 5 meter line H&B turned the scrum over and with 8 min’s on the clock scored through Brian McNeilly as the scrum pushed over. (5-0) Soon came more forward power as Simon (on for injured Mat Dawes) crashed over converted by Peter Eames (12-0). Crowborough made some good breaks but failed to retain the ball at breakdown, one of these turn-over's and the basks the H&B backs got to show some pace giving David Hirst the chance to recover his drop, he danced over in the corner to score (17-0). Another try to the backs as Peter Eames bulldozed over and converted (24-0) Brian McNeilly managed a second as he powered his way for the fifth try just on half-time. (29-0)
Chris Eastwood and Robby Simmons and the second half started with a well worked try for Murray Davis stepping wide before cutting back below the posts (34-0). This was answered by a try and conversion for Crowborough who had not let their heads goes down always looking that they could make ground. (34-7). H&B soon took the difference back Peter Eames scoring a second try (39-7) on Came Phil Begg (back from his broken rib) to replace Nick Beaney. Before long it was Andy Small’s turn to cross the line converted Phil Begg (46-7) the next try came from Robbie Simmons solo jinking run converted Phil Begg (53-7). More changes as Jo Word and Dominic Sewell came on the scrums had to go uncontested due to an injury. Rodger Kingston soon went over for the tenth try converted Phil Begg. (60-7) the final try went to Chris Eastwood flying down the wing breaking one tackle and placing the ball under the posts, this was converted by Peter Eames (67-7)
A fine afternoon’s rugby played with great sprit from both Crowborough who never gave up pushing hard the end made H&B having kept focused on the game and at no time let the score go to their heads.
