First I would like to say a hearty sorry to Murry Whittington for
getting his name wrong last week, what does the Capitan know anyway?
So on with the game.
H&B started with the usual heavy pack of rumbling
forwards and after just 5 mins and a 5m scrum Ady Evans made a dart for the line being taken down a meter out.
It was Brian McNeilly in on the ball quickly took the first score of the day with his pick and drive over the line.
This was converted by Peter Eames to make it 7-0.
Then came the run of the day as Phil Osunsami picked up a ball on his 22m line
and skipped jinxed danced dodged and just out ran everyone, first one way then the other, left then right,
handing of players as if swotting fly’s, even dodging his own players, only to reach the line and drop
the ball. Have you ever seen so many men fall down in tears of laughter?
With H&B applying more pressure they soon extended their lead through Peter Eames thundering over from inside centre who dually converted to make it 14-0. Straight from kick off Hellingly were back
in the game with a well-worked try and conversion 14-7.
Mat Dawes then wimped off the pitch soon followed by Brian McNeilly.
Strong tackling for Matt Bumpuss and Dave Hirst kept Hellingly out of H&B’s 22 and jinking runs from John Fisher allowed the forwards to keep going forward.
Old timers Bill Langly, Duncan Dobson and Rodger Kingston displaying their 160 years of experience between then slowing down the game to their pace as H&B controlled the game. H&B were soon extending
their lead with a try from Phil Osunsami to make up for his previous effort as H&B finished the first half 19-7.
On came the subs to give some of the older players a rest and it was soon back to business for H&B.
The forwards driving and rucking down the pitch and Phil Begg crashing over and converting to make it 26-7.
Then it was Robby Simmons’s turn to get on the score sheet as a quick penalty taken by Ady Evans popped to Begg to Simmons and over. Converted by Begg. 33-7.
Hellingly then came back to make it 33-12 with a try from Murry Whittington on loan for the day.
The final points came from prop Neil Clark as he ran the length of the pitch following a quick penalty kicked down field
by Begg which was fielded by Karl Bramwell who offloaded to Neil Clark thundering down field like the flying Scotsman steaming down the line. Converted by Phil Begg to end the game 40 points to 12.
Next weeks game home again to Uckfield 2’s 2:30 kick-off.
