Hastings & Bexhill 33 - Uckfield 8
A cloudy afternoon at H&B, Brian McNeilly being rested having had a hard start to the season and with David Hirst standing in as captain the game started slow for both sides, no real pressure either way, until Uckfield made a break on the wing and bringing the ball back into the centres was unlucky not to get through, a scramble to stop the attack gave the opening points to Uckfield by way of a penalty.
H&B restarted and failed to make the ten meter-line, and a scrum was set, H&B took this against the head and keeping the ball for almost 8 mins ended up on the Uckfield 5 meter line with a penalty of their own, taken quick by Ady Evans the ball went down the line and with some good foot-work Peter Eames got the try, he also took the extra 2 for the conversion. The game opened up a little and scrappy loose play from both sides was turning into frustration and not points. A bit of hope when a chip forward was touched down for H&B by Matt Dawes and converted by Eames.
Half-time and H&B found themselves now playing into the very low very bright sun out for the end of the day. Pushing hard the H&B pack worked a good try from an 8 pick up at a scrum by Robbie Simmons and another 2 from Eames. Uckfield restarted and after turning the ball chipped over re-gathered and took 5 back.
Always going to be a tuff game the score remained the same for a time both teams showing some good runs of play but unable to retain the ball for points. H&B's Dave Hirst made up for some early problems with the ball by scoring a try in the corner. Not long on the clock and Roger Kingston when over for H&B last try again Eames giving the extra 2.
The game finished 3 minutes early after Jason Lusted when down with a knee injury. Special thanks to Phil Begg and Neil Clark stepping up to play for Uckfield as replacements (Neil almost scoring)
