The writing seemed to be on the wall with the average age of H&B about 40 and Eastbourne’s at about 25. The game plan was let the forwards wear down the Eastbourne pack and keep the ball tight, the game started, fast and Furious, Eastbourne soon built up a 0-10 lead with H&B giving away far to many penalty’s. A stiff talk from Capt Phil and H&B started to slow the game down and soon were camped in the Eastbourne 22. The pack lead by Brian McNeilly started to turn the screw and soon found McNeilly CRASHING over for H&B’s first point’s followed by the conversion by Phil Begg.7-10. Some great tackling from Dave Getty and Matt Bumpus kept the score down and half time came with a much-needed breather. The second half started as the first with the younger faster legs of Eastbourne running and passing which soon lead to a third unconverted try. 7-15.This soon turned into 7-22 when a break down the left, left an overlap on the right allowing Eastbourne scoring and converting. With 20 mins to go H&B through all forward and pressurised the opponents try line. First McNeilly going over and judged to have been held up, then old timer Duncan Dobson bulldozing over the line Eastbourne diving all over the Ref awarding a penalty try for Phil Begg to convert. With time dying out H&B pack again showing their experience Gus Godden, Matt Dawes and Andy Small driving a maul from 25 yards out allowing Brian McNeilly to get his second try of the afternoon Begg once again converting making it 21-22 with 3 minutes left but alas not enough time for the old boys of H&B to grab a last minutes winner.
