A close game that gave the ref a smile for the last time
A few weeks to x-mass, the last league game this half of the season and with Santa's big night out to look forward to H&B travelled to rivals Eastbourne. Both teams needing the win to stay in the running for the top two league positions come the end of the season. Eastbourne won the toss and elected to play with the dieing sun in their faces. In a game that was always going to be tight and one score could make the difference it was H&B on the score board first. The H&B pack, big and strong, were straight in from kick-off and had Eastbourne on the back foot driving Eastbourne towards their try line and with only 5 minutes on the clock, it was captain Phil Begg running like a steaming juggernaut crashing over the line to make it 5-0 to H&B, only to miss the conversion hitting the left hand upright. This woke up the Eastbourne side who from the restart came on much strongher in the scrums a little wheeling give them pocession of the ball and they made good use taking the game to the H&B half. With the line out going 50/50 no one could afford any mistakes. Strong tackling form centres Nick Beany and Peter Eames led by the ever-youthful Mick Ellis kept the Eastbourne back line at bay. Duncan Dobson still leading the pack, after what seemed to be a career finishing injury last week, kept the opposition forwards on thier toes. Eastbourne inside centre took a pop-pass from thier stand-off and was away with a free run to the line a try under H&B's post, to the relief of H&B the Eastbourne kicker copied H&B's and also hit the post 5-5. Quickly H&B was back on the 'Bourne's 22 line and with pick and drive took the game to within 5-meters, turning the ball in a ruck Eastbourne knocked on and a scump gave Brian McNeilly a chance to put H&B in the lead again only to be held up. A much needed break and a couple of sub's at half time. With all to play for in the second half both teams gave it their all the H&B back row of Karl Bramwell Gus Godden and Andy Small hunting like a pack of wolfs scrapping for any loss ball. Eastbourne went to the H&B line and had a try held up both sides pushing hard. Matt Bumpass back from his jolly to Australia coming on as much needed reinforcements kept the pressure on in the centres, but both teams failed to add to thier score lines. The game ended a much deserved draw and with the spoils sheared out between the two teams. It was with great sorrow to here this was Mick Davis' (The Ref) who in the pass had played for both H&B and Eastbourne last game and that he will soon be moving to Fance, goodluck and a fond farewell goes out to the man in green who may never again be seen officiating our noble game. Cheers mate.
