"Rewarding Rugby"

Welcome to the Youth Section of Hastings & Bexhill Rugby Club

Rugby Football is one of the fastest growing team sports in the UK. This growth is expected to continue and to accelerate in the run up to, and after, the 2015 Rugby World Cup which is taking place in England. The Hastings area is fortunate that four of the match venues selected are within easy reach - Twickenham, Wembley, and the Emirates Stadiums in London and St Mary's Stadium in Southampton.

Hastings and Bexhill RFC have been successfully running youth rugby for over 30 years and currently has one of the largest youth rugby sections in Sussex. We are committed to continue to encourage youngsters of all ages and both sexes to play rugby football. The quality of our coaching is can be seen by the number of our players that are regularly selected for Sussex County representative matches.

The club has an ongoing programme of Child Protection and general Child Welfare policies to ensure that the junior players are in the safest hands they could possibly be. Details of these policies and guidelines can be found by going to the Youth Rugby Policies and Guidelines section.

The Junior Rugby and Mini Rugby headings above will direct you to both levels of Youth Rugby within the Club and give contact details of the each squad's Coach and Manager. You will also find details of fixtures and match reports.

Below you will find an outline of Youth Rugby and how and when you can become involved.

The youth game is divided into two sections: Mini Rugby (under 7 to Under 12),  Youth Rugby (under 13 to Under 16)and Colts Rugby (Under 17 and Under 18). As the players progress through the years new game laws are introduced and any new techniques required safely taught. This allows both girls and boys to learn Rugby Football in a safe and enjoyable way. New players of all ages are welcome at the club, our coaches will soon bring new players at intermediate levels up to speed with the game laws and skills.

Hastings and Bexhill RFC follow the Rugby Football Union's "Continuum" training programme which was developed to introduce the many aspects of the game in a progression through each of the age groups.

In the Under 7 and Under 8 age group they are taught "Tag Rugby". At this level there is no physical contact between the players. The tackle is replaced by the defender removing a ribbon from the attacking players belt and shouting "tag". This still allows the neccessary development of ball handling, evasion, vision and team skills. A guide to Tag Rugby can be found at http://www.coachingrugby.com/tag/laws/laws.htm.  There are 7 players in a tag rugby team.

Under 9 and Under 10 age groups play "Mini Rugby". The more physical aspects of rugby are introduced at this level with tackling, mauls, rucks, line-outs and scrummages included in the game. Line-outs and scrummages are uncontested at Under 9 level. There are 9 players in a mini rugby team.

Under 11 and Under 12 age groups play "Midi Rugby". This is the full game of rugby but played with only 12 players in each team and on a smaller sized pitch.

Under 13's and above play 15-a-side rugby on a full size pitch.

Age groups are determined by a players age on the 1st September of each season.

All of the Club's Lead coaches, and the majority of assistant coaches have attended and passed the RFU Level 1 Coaching Qualification. This is an intensive 15 hour training programme which culminates with the coach having to show that they have the ability to coach rugby in an effective, fun and enjoyable manner.

It is easy to join our growing and exciting club. The season starts on the first Sunday in September each year. However new players are welcome to come at anytime during the playing season. You can either:

  • Turn up on a Sunday and ask for Martyn Amess
  • Contact one of the coaches or team managers for the relevant age group

No special kit is required other than a pair of football boots. However we strongly recommend the use of a mouth guard which can be bought quite cheaply either at the club or from any good sports shop.
